Robert Smithson, in giving his artistic consult for the design of a new airport, suggested the use of the crystalline abstractness of the area grid drawn up by the topographer. In Smithson idea, the airport is to conceive as a universe, a place where diverse functions were localized in a permanently unstable way. Smithson developed an idea for a low-lying site-specific project to be seen from the air.  In this artificial landscape he proposed that four installation were put in place, of Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris and Carl Andre. These installation took the form of artificial hills and craters, asphalt surfaces and cement cubes buried underground, features that would become characteristic of American Land Art and dedicated, in this case, not to the limitless desert but to those new urban landscape produced by the urban sprawl, what Marc Augé later would have describes as  non-lieu .
